Immediate Fixes for Plumbing Problems

Any plumbing problem is a nightmare for a homeowner. It usually means there will be a big mess and a big bill to follow. Although I cannot fix the problem of money, I can help you quickly solve some common plumbing problems. For most plumbing disasters, there is always a temporary fix to prevent any further damage.

Toilet overflowing

When I referred to the nightmare of plumbing problems, the daddy of them all is the overflowing toilet. There is nothing pleasant about it. To fix an overflowing toilet, the first thing you should do is push the tank stopper down to the valve seat and keep pressure on it. The tank stopper and valve seat are found inside the toilet tank. Then, you should immediately turn off the valve underneath the toilet. This is the water shut-off valve. If you feel extra ambitious, you can always try to unclog the toilet with a plunger instead of calling the plumber.

Broken Pipe

Broken pipes are very common in old houses and houses that are in cold climates. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix to the solution, but you can stop the water from pouring into your house. Simply, turn off the main water shut-off valve to the house. As soon as possible, call your plumber to replace the pipe.

Faucet won’t shut off

The best way to quickly solve this problem is to reach under the sink and turn off the water shut-off valve. This may be behind cabinets where the sink pipes run. Although this doesn’t solve the main problem, it allows you to have time to think and call a plumber if necessary.

Plugged Sink

Plugged sinks are fairly common, especially in households with garbage disposals. The first thing you should do is turn off any appliance that drains into that particular sink. Than, use a plunger or a snake to dislodge the clogging agent. Be sure not to use any harsh chemical drain cleaner if your blockage is a total blockage.

Although plumbing problems can be disastrous, if you know a few quick tips, you could prevent a lot of damage. Knowing how to shut off the water to each faucet, toilet, and water fixture is a good start. Once you master the tricks of preventing damage, you can move on to the more difficult issues of repair. When you learn how to repair plumbing issues, you will save a lot on plumber fees.
